Stages of Frozen Shoulder
67
There are 3 stages that are commonly used to characterize frozen shoulder (also known as adhesive capsulitis. They are Freezing, Frozen, and Thawing. I've outlined each of the stages in the videos below so that you can know what best to expect in each stage as well as what you should and should not do depending on what stage you are currently in.
It is important to note that while these stages have been traditionally used in physical therapy not only as classifications for the different aspects of the frozen shoulder but also as bench marks for the different methods to use to treatment of frozen shoulder, I have found that treating a client based on the stages of frozen shoulder does not add anything to the therapy and instead it may actually delay recovery.
Frozen Shoulder Stages - Freezing Stage
Freezing Stage: Take Home Points
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says: "In the 'freezing' stage, the patient develops a slow onset of pain. As the pain worsens, the shoulder loses motion. This stage may last from six weeks to nine months."
During the freezing stage, the person can limit the initial "freezing" by implementing various range of motion exercises. By following a comprehensive and progressive plan, the person can begin to regain his or her range of motion in all directions. Although pain can be high during this stage and make movement difficult, increasing the range of motion can reduce the overall negative effects of a frozen shoulder dramatically.

Frozen Stage: Take Home Points
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says: "The 'frozen' stage is marked by a slow improvement in pain, but the stiffness remains. This stage generally lasts four months to nine months."
It is important that the patient or frozen shoulder sufferer begins a comprehensive stretching plan during this stage. By stretching the muscles, and other soft-tissue, the person can decrease the severity of the "freezing" that occurs with frozen shoulder, and in some cases, eliminate it altogether.
Frozen Shoulder Stages - Thawing Stage
Thawing a Frozen Shoulder
Thawing Stage: Take Home Points
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says: "The final stage is the 'thawing,' during which shoulder motion slowly returns toward normal. This generally lasts five months to 26 months."
It is during the thawing stage of frozen shoulder that any and all components of the frozen shoulder plan should be used. It is during this stage that the person will have decreased pain and increased range of motion. Performing strengthening exercises, along with stretching, range of motion and targeted soft-tissue work is key in eliminating the frozen shoulder for good. Since pain will be reduced, and more motion will be available, it will be much easier to find success in this stage.

Alot of stretching every moring and evening, even during the day at work I do exersizes. I have had cortizone shots twice and even tried accuputure, the pain was so bad, the accuputure helped. Now I am down to 1 pain pill a day, some time i don't even take one. everyday it gets better just keep on stretching.
